Join Outdoor Afro for a reflective Black Birding experience that goes beyond nature observation—it’s a celebration of legacy, resilience, and justice. This special event honors the Port Chicago Sailors, a group of predominantly African American servicemen who, in 1944, bravely protested unsafe and discriminatory working conditions following a deadly explosion at the Port Chicago Naval Magazine in Contra Costa County.
Their courageous stand led to one of the largest mass mutiny trials in U.S. history and sparked a national reckoning with racism in the military. Though punished at the time, their actions laid the groundwork for desegregation of the U.S. Navy and catalyzed the civil rights movement.
As we explore the outdoors together, we also uplift the stories of Black resistance and environmental connection—reminding us that nature is both a place of healing and a platform for justice. This is more than birding, it’s remembrance, recognition, and a call to continue the work of equity in every space we occupy.
